Constant Delight

“Then I was constantly at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his
presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.” (Proverbs 8:30-31)

I’m a word nerd, so I love looking up definitions and synonyms of words to gain a better understanding of what they mean. The word “delight” seems like an oldfashioned word that nobody really uses in conversations anymore. I had a basic comprehension of what the word meant, but I wanted to dig a little deeper into it's denotative meaning.

After looking up the definition of “delight” on Google, I found that the word could also mean “ to captivate, thrill, or greatly please.”

I started to think about delighting in the Lord. Everything about Him is captivating and His intense love is thrilling, so why is it so easy to treat Him like another item to cross off our never ending checklists? He gives us so many reasons to rejoice, but we often focus our attention on our busy schedules, which leaves us drained, stressed, and restless. That’s not how God intended us to live. He created us to walk continuously in His presence and to find our source of joy from an uninterrupted relationship with Him.

It’s hard to live an untouched life while we live in a world full of distractions. We are surrounded by God’s loving presence, and if we take a moment to be in that presence, we can experience the joy He so desires us to possess. Delighting in Him can erase every fear and calm every anxious heart.

God gives us little blessings everyday, but if we’re too focused on our daily routines, we’ll miss everything He has in store for us.

Driving is not something I enjoy, so a 45 minute trek to school everyday isn’t something I look forward to. This week as I was driving to school, I noticed a beautiful field of wildflowers that the sun hit perfectly. It was truly a picturesque scene. I’ve passed that same field so many times, but had never taken the time to appreciate it before.

When I took the time to admire the flowers outside my window, it made me smile. God knows I don’t enjoy driving to school, so that field was His way of reminding me that He’s still got me. He’s looking out for me even in the smallest ways. Christ is not a God that withholds blessings from us. He wants to bless us and be with us if we take the time to be with Him and constantly delight in Him.

Father, I pray that You would teach me to walk in Your presence everyday. Help me to delight in You and find my joy through Your goodness. Captivate me with Your love. When I become weighed down by the busyness of life, I ask that You would remind me that You’re still holding me. Teach me to find my rest in You and to be with You continually. Help me to search for Your goodness and Your blessings throughout my day. Teach me to see Your hand in everything. I love you, Lord. Amen.

When was the last time you were captivated, thrilled, or greatly pleased by God? How often do you get excited about Christ’s love?
How can you constantly delight in the Lord and continually walk in his presence? What are some little ways God has blessed you this week?
