If Your Friends Jumped Off a Cliff, Would You Follow?

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy. (Proverbs 27:6)

It’s a well-known fact that girls can be pretty mean. I remember having knock-down, drag-out fights with my girlfriends in elementary school that I swore I’d never recover from. Thankfully, the same girls I resented back then have turned into the sweetest companions today. They give me advice on family, boys, clothes, and everything in between; however, the advice my friends give are not always what I want to hear because they aren’t afraid to tell me when I am in the wrong. Due to this accountability partnership, I know that these friendships are genuine.

Proverbs 27:6 paints an illustration that explains exactly why you need the “brutally honest” people in your circle. Fake friends who encourage bad behavior are the ones you need to cut ties with. The classic saying, “If your friends jumped off a cliff, would you jump too?” came from the evidence that the company you keep influences your life. Contrary to popular belief, you DON’T only live once. Your heavenly Father has prepared an eternal place for you in heaven, and we are called to follow his instructions while we are here on earth.

It’s crucial to find honest accountability partners who encourage you to better yourself for the Lord.

Lord I know that You desire believers to join together to carry out Your plans. Help us to unite and support one another through relationships, so that we may be an example to unbelievers. Give us the strength to cut ties, and the wisdom to understand when that’s necessary. Thank You for redeeming us. Amen.

Are you surrounding yourself with the wrong influences?
Could you step up and keep your friends accountable for their actions?
Evaluate the conversations and activities you do with your current friends.
Ask yourself: if Jesus joined your group for the day, would He be pleased?
